Three

I have a fascination with the number three. I see it everywhere or find myself grouping things in threes. In numerology “….the number 3 resonates with the energies of optimism and joy, inspiration and creativity, speech and communication, good taste, imagination and intelligence, sociability and society, friendliness, kindness and compassion. Number 3 also relates to art, humour, energy, growth, expansion and the principles of increase, spontaneity, broad-minded thinking, synthesis, triad, heaven-human-earth, past-present-future, thought-word-action, demonstrates love through creative imagination…”

All sounds so lovely and there does seem to be something to this. Even in my art work there are patterns of three. I can’t seem to find a balance with a piece without it. The trinity often comes to mind, and in the bible it is the second most referenced number and its sacredness is second only to the number one. One being the totality of God. In Buddhism it is one of the pillar numbers and has far more references than any other. The three refuges: Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. The triple Gem and the three worlds or realms of existence: desire, form and formless. The three bodies of the Buddhas: truth, bliss and emanation. The three pillars of Zen, and so on.

In Islamic traditions, Allah was said to be odd, and thus, loved odd numbers. The first number to indicate the multitude is three and therefore was considered sacred. “The Golden Ratio” in art is a segmentation of three that is natural to the eye’s movement and means of rest. Da Vinci used it extensively but then, interestingly enough, it was called “The Divine Proportion”. I can’t help but feel we all have some pattern of three within us, as certainly mind/body/spirit lives in us daily.

These images of an immersed dock are beautiful unto themselves, but the three posts provide an odd sort of peace I can hardly explain. I believe spirit and the universe have a universal language that is found in math and numbers. I don’t really understand it, to be honest, I just know in these images harmony resonates deeply for me. Three gives me a sense of balance, as if my inner world sat on a tripod.

  1. I too love numerology but am definitely a novice. For me I see 123, 11:44 and always 11 after the hour. As I see it, the three posts create two pathways, like a road. It creates order in my mind, perhaps this is what brings you peace; a place to pass through into this beautiful terrain. Live life in FULL bloom my sweet Noelle!

    • I’ve been playing a lot with numbers. I have a numerology book and downloaded Doreen Virtue’s angel numbers app. Like you I get recurrent numbers that keep popping up. You have hit on two powerful numbers 11 and 44. In DV’s app 11 is about rapid manifestation so stay positive. Your thinking is having quick realization in your life. 44 is about support and comfort from your guides. In numerology, 11 and 44 are both master numbers. (which, by the way, is a number I see a lot, too) These numbers are often about inspiration, leadership, special gifts. So quite unit to see them back to back like that. Yes, a doorway. I do like that.

  2. I took a numerology course last year that opened my thinking about these things. Thanks for adding to my knowledge. I have noticed that I am always at my luckiest on odd numbered years consistently thru my life, but no one specific number.

  3. Interesting to learn more about the number 3, and great photos by the way. You’ve made me quite curious about numerology At the moment I’m writing a story about Chinese New Year, and my lucky numbers according to the Chinese Zodiac are 3,4, and 9! What a coincidence !!!! 🙂

    • Ah, my friend, there are no coincidences. They say the language of the universe is math and I’m coming to really think that. I always look up numbers that repeat themselves. Very powerful. Interesting that the number three is a creation number, the number four a stability and organization number and the number nine is a completion number. You seem to quite literally be attracted to the beginning, middle and end. The ability to bring anything you desire to fruition. Now that’s some good math!

  4. Beautiful, thank you my friend. I am interested to know more about your artwork if I’m not being too inquisitive. What artistic mediums do you like to work in and what are your inspirations? Is there anywhere online I (we) my see your work? I’m sure it must be a wonderful outpouring of the beauty of your soul.

    • I’m playing with many things: hand made papers, alcohol ink, paint and so on, but the real intent is collage. I love putting pieces together from various mediums into collages. Some are more than three, but most are three pieces somehow arranged. Nothing online yet, but I’m getting there.

      • That sounds like a wonderful way to play in the world and I can’t wait to see the results. Do let me (us) know when you’re ready to share some:)

      • One of my meditation friends in Hobart is just now starting to boldly put her own work online. I feel embolden by it. I also finally crested the fear wave and have decided to self publish my meditation pieces. I’m in dialogue with Lulu.com and hope to have the book together by the fall with my own photography. Scary and exciting, all at once. So thank you so much for the support. It actually does keep my feet moving.

      • Isn’t it so exciting what can happen when we say yes to ourselves and to the Universe. I’m so very happy for you my friend. Keep me posted. I will love to read and recommend your book.

      • You are a love. I realized it’s an adventure in and of itself. Whether the book is successful or not, the act of committing to the course of action and seeing what will happen has an enormous impact on one’s spirit. So thanks for the support. Will keep you posted.

      • Want a ‘love’ button for that last comment. Yes, committing to this blog and sharing my authentic heart with the world has had a huge transformative effect on me.

      • It’s funny, but I think blogging simply takes the whole “money” equation out of things. Without that there we suddenly feel freer to just be ourselves and express our creative energy however we like. Where as, when money is involved you are constantly judging whether something you love has value or can be sold, it changes the entire dynamic . So yes, I think the commitment to blogging is spiritually HUGE.

      • Interesting, I hadn’t thought about it in that way as I’m only just getting back into writing after many years. But put that way I can see yes, there’s immense freedom in blogging. I have experienced something of the same with my pottery. When I let myself get caught up in feeling I have to make X number of pieces and to make pieces that will sell, it takes the joy out of it for me. When I let myself just creatively explore and develop without giving those things much of a thought, the joy comes back

      • I don’t think money is bad, by any means, bu there is definitely something that happens when we can separate our creative genius from the outcome of that genius, I think.

    • Agree completely, money is definitely not bad, it’s all in the way you use it, and the more the better I say – more opportunities to use it for good for self and in the world. But detaching from outcomes and wanting validation from others feels very key.

  5. Fascinating!
I have to confess to knowing very little about numerology, and I after reading your post, and all the comments, I’m anxious to know more.
